Mac Peoples may call himself the Texas Gangster, but he’s got a positive message to bring back home.

He’s a Rockboy Records hip-hop singer and Texarkana native who was recently back in town with fellow artists from the indie label. They spoke at several regional schools, churches and detention centers.

Musician Mac Peoples of Rockboy Records performs for students Dec. 10, 2009, at Washington High School in Texarkana, Ark. Peoples has found success in New York City.

Peoples, who now calls Houston and Manhattan home, has been working on recordings with producer and Rockboy Records founder and CEO D/R Period, who has also worked with artists like Jay-Z and Nas.

Fly Ty, president of Rockboy Records in New York City, and Arkansas-side native Mac Peoples speak to youth Friday at the Lantz Lurry Juvenile Detention Center in Texarkana, Ark.

Hip-hop artist and hometown boy Mac Peoples paid a visit Friday to the Lantz Lurry Juvenile Detention Center in Texarkana to “get real” with youthful inmates.

“I came to make sure my people’s dreams are fulfilled,” said Peoples, who attended Arkansas High School in the late ’90s.

Peoples said he spent much of his youth dreaming of music and wrote many songs in the classrooms of his alma mater. Whenever he finished a song in class, he smiled. His teachers thought his smiling meant a good grade.
